Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is the gold standard for fence pickets because of two natural properties that other species cannot match:
- Natural rot resistance. Western Red Cedar contains thujaplicins, naturally occurring compounds that resist fungal decay. This means the wood fights rot from the inside out, long before any stain or sealant enters the picture.
- Natural insect resistance. The same compounds that resist rot also deter termites and other wood-boring insects. In a state where subterranean termites are active across every county, this matters.

That level of material selection is not typical in this industry. Heat and UV exposure
Summer temperatures regularly push past 100 degrees in the Tulsa metro. Extended UV exposure breaks down wood fibers and bleaches the natural color of cedar to a silver-gray. Over time, repeated wind loading loosens fasteners, racks panels, and stresses post connections. A fence built with undersized posts or shallow post depth will show wind damage years before a properly constructed one.

Clay soils and the freeze-thaw cycle
Tulsa sits on expansive clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry. This seasonal movement puts lateral pressure on fence posts that sandy or loamy soils do not. Add Oklahoma’s freeze-thaw cycles (we regularly swing from freezing nights to 50-degree days in winter), and posts that are not set deep enough or backfilled properly can shift, lean, or heave.
Ice storms

Keep vegetation clear
Plants, vines, and soil buildup against the base of a fence trap moisture and accelerate rot. Maintain a clear zone along both sides of the fence line. This is the single easiest thing a homeowner can do to extend fence life.
Manage sprinkler contact
Sprinkler heads that hit the fence every day create a constant wet-dry cycle that is worse for the wood than rain. Adjust your sprinkler zones so they water your lawn, not your fence.
Address minor issues early
A loose picket or a leaning post is easy to fix when you catch it early. Left alone, that small issue puts stress on adjacent components and accelerates damage to the surrounding section.
Consider staining or sealing
A quality stain or sealant adds a layer of UV and moisture protection that extends the life of the wood and preserves its appearance. Signs it may be time for a new fence:
- Multiple leaning or shifted posts. If the posts are failing, the rest of the fence is on borrowed time.
- Widespread rot at the base of pickets. Replacing a few boards is maintenance. Replacing a third of them is a new fence waiting to happen.
- Structural racking or panel separation. When entire sections are pulling away from posts or rails are separating, the connections have reached the end of their service life.
- The fence is 20+ years old and showing multiple symptoms. At some point, the cumulative wear adds up and replacement becomes the more cost-effective path.
