Rot in a wood fence usually starts in two places: the buried post and the top of the picket. This build closes off both. A 2×6 cedar cap board with 1×4 cedar trim covers the picket tops, and 2-1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete replace buried timber altogether. The pickets are pre-stained cedar, 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet, on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails with galvanized ring shank nails. Our shop built the matching walk gate on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch. Very little of that will ask anything of you over the years. Verdigris sits in open country, and open country is hard on a fence.
