A capped fence keeps its shape better than an open topped one, because the cap board ties every picket to its neighbor along the whole run. This one uses 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ cedar pickets, pre-stained, on 2-1/2″ square steel fence posts set in concrete with three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails behind them. A 2×6 cedar cap board finishes the top and 1×4 cedar trim covers the joint below it. Galvanized ring shank nails hold everything together. The trim also shields end grain from rain, which is where wood fences take on water first. The result gives a Broken Arrow property a finished edge rather than a raw one.
