Pre-stained cedar was specified here, pairing the wood’s own decay resistance with a finish applied to every face before installation. The 5/8 by 3.5 inch pickets hang on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. Both openings get welded gates rather than wood framed ones: we built each frame from 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, clad to match the fence, and set them to swing outward away from the house. Steel framed gates hold their shape at the latch corner, where a heavy privacy gate usually gives up. Sand Springs yards with two access points suit this arrangement.
