Year after year, the part that usually fails on a wood fence is the post, and this build takes that off your list. The 2 1/2 inch square steel posts sit in concrete, so nothing rots at the soil line when Broken Arrow clay swells in spring and pulls back in August. Cedar pickets at 5/8 by 3.5 inches carry the visible face, and three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails behind them keep the boards flat. Galvanized ring shank nails grip and stay put instead of working loose and streaking rust down the wood. Cedar fades toward a soft grey if you leave it alone, and plenty of owners around here prefer it that way.
