Hang a gate on a wood post and the hinge screws eventually work loose. Hang it in a run built on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete and the hinge side stays put. That is the structural story here: steel below, three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails across, and 5/8 by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets pre-stained cedar tone above, all pinned with galvanized ring shank nails. The walk gate we built uses those same boards, heavy duty hinges, a secure latch, and back rails of its own so it never drops toward the ground. Jenks yards get used hard by kids and dogs, and the gate always takes the worst of it.
