A wood gate frame can rack over time. A welded one cannot. We built this walk gate on 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, welded up in our shop, then clad it to match the fence. It opens outward, away from the house, keeping the swing clear of the siding. The fence is Douglas fir, 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot pickets pre-stained in a cedar tone, over three fir 2×4 backrails, with galvanized ring shank nails throughout and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Between the galvanizing and the steel below grade, corrosion and rot both stay out of it. One gate takes daily use on a Broken Arrow lot, so we built it heavy.
