The line got staked before anything else, then we augered, plumbed, and concreted 2 1/2 inch square steel posts down the run. Three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails tie the posts together, and 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets, pre-stained in a cedar tone, go on with galvanized ring shank nails so they hold under wind load. We built and hung the walk gate afterward, once the fence line was straight and the footings had set. Pre-staining puts color on every face of the board, not only the side you can reach later. It gives a Bixby backyard a finished look from the first day.
