Three back rails instead of two is what keeps a tall picket flat. A 5/8 inch board fastened only at top and bottom will cup and twist once it has been through a couple of Oklahoma summers, so we run a middle Douglas fir 2×4 rail the length of the fence and nail every picket to all three. The pickets are fir, 3.5 inches wide, pre-stained a cedar tone, with dog ear tops. Posts are 2 1/2 inch square steel in concrete. Galvanized ring shank nails hold the boards without working loose. A matching walk gate finishes it. This is a build that still looks straight on a Broken Arrow lot years after the crew leaves.
