Solid from the ground up, pickets butted tight, and finished in a cedar tone before anything was installed, so the color is uniform rather than board by board. The Douglas fir pickets are 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch, dog ear topped, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails to three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails. Those tie into 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Three rails instead of two is what stops a tall picket from cupping away from the fence as it dries. The gate we built for it uses the same backrail construction and galvanized fasteners. A Collinsville yard gets a defined outdoor room instead of an open edge.
