Six feet puts the top of the fence above eye level, so a patio or a kitchen window stops sharing with the street. The pickets are Douglas fir at 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet, pre-stained in a cedar tone before they went up, which means the color reaches the edges and laps instead of stopping where a brush can get. They hang on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, with three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and galvanized ring shank nails that keep their grip as the wood moves. Steel below grade cannot rot when clay holds water. We built the walk gate from the same stock. Bixby backyards get their privacy this way.
