Douglas fir is a dense, straight grained framing wood, and it takes a nail without splitting at the edge, which matters on a picket only 5/8 of an inch thick. The dog ear cut clips the top corners so water runs off instead of standing on a square end. Cedar tone stain went on before installation, giving the boards even color from the first day. Behind them sit three fir 2×4 back rails on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete footings, with galvanized ring shank nails holding through seasonal swelling.
