We set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, then hung Douglas fir pickets at 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet, pre-stained cedar tone, across three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails. A solid privacy wall catches wind like a sail, and steel posts take that push without the twist and decay a buried timber eventually gives up to. Galvanized ring shank nails hold the pickets through seasonal swelling. The walk gate came out of the same material, built and hung by our crew. On tight Bixby lots, the fence line is often the only separation there is.
