Warm brown from day one, rather than the slow grey of bare wood: the Douglas fir pickets came pre stained in a cedar tone, so the run had its finished look before we packed up. Dog ear tops give the top line a little relief instead of a hard edge. Underneath sit 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, and galvanized ring shank nails through 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch pickets. Steel posts matter in Bixby clay, which swells wet and shrinks dry and will push a timber post out of plumb over the years. The walk gate we built uses the same stained stock, so it vanishes into the line when closed.
