Keep soil and mulch off the bottom of the pickets and this fence will largely take care of itself. Every fastener in it is galvanized, from the ring shank nails holding the Douglas fir pickets to the hardware on the walk gate, so rust does not track down the face after a wet spring. The 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot boards came pre-stained in a cedar tone, and three fir 2×4 backrails keep them aligned. Below grade, 2 1/2 inch square steel posts sit in concrete and stay out of the rot equation entirely. The gate we built matches the fence board for board.
