Pre-stained pickets change the order of work, since the color is already on the board when it reaches the yard. We set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, framed with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, and nailed 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets in a cedar tone finish using galvanized ring shank nails. The walk gate was built from the same material and hung once the run was complete. Because the coating went on before assembly, the back faces and cut edges are covered too, and those are where a bare board grays first. That holds up well through a Broken Arrow summer.
