Ring shank nails, which is what we used here, hold far better than smooth shank under that kind of shaking, and they are galvanized so they will not stain the wood. The pickets are 5/8 by 3.5 inch Douglas fir, pre-stained in a cedar tone, mounted on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. The walk gate carries its own backrails and swings on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch. On a typical Bixby lot, this build gives privacy that does not need attention every year.
