Douglas fir takes a stain evenly, and cedar tone on it produces a consistent mid brown with the grain still visible rather than a painted look. The pickets are 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch, dog ear cut, hung on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails with galvanized ring shank nails so they do not back out under repeated wind. Posts are 2 1/2 inch square steel set in concrete, which keeps the top line reading level even after several wet and dry swings in the clay.
