We built the walk gate from the same Douglas fir stock as the run, so the picket line, the dog ear tops, and the cedar tone finish carry straight across the opening. Heavy duty hinges and a secure latch handle the daily use, and galvanized fasteners keep rust from streaking down the boards. The fence uses 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ pre-stained pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, nailed off with galvanized ring shank nails. Under all of it, 2 1/2″ square steel posts sit in concrete, which is what stops the leaning and rot that ends most wood fences early. For a Bixby backyard, that means privacy that still looks square years in.
