Steel posts set the schedule on this build. Each 2 1/2 inch square post went into concrete first, and the wood only started going up once those footings held. Three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails carry 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets, pre-stained in a cedar tone, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. We hung the wood walk gate once the fence line was complete. The advantage of this framing is simple, because the part holding everything up never sits in wet dirt, so the fence stays plumb while the pickets weather on their own schedule. Glenpool yards on newer grade benefit from that kind of stability.
