Color arrives with the material on this build. Every 5/8 by 3.5 inch Douglas fir picket was stained a cedar tone before installation, which puts finish on the back faces and the edges where it does the most good. Three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails support the pickets, galvanized ring shank nails hold them flat, and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete keep the whole run from leaning as the ground shifts underneath it. Fir is dense enough to hold a straight line at this height. The walk gate matches the fence, with heavy duty hinges and a secure latch.
