Three backrails rather than two is the reason a six foot fence stays flat. Each 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot Douglas fir picket is fixed at three points, top, middle, and bottom, so a board that wants to cup has nowhere to go. The pre-stained cedar tone finish came on the wood before installation, and galvanized ring shank nails hold through years of expansion and contraction. Set in concrete, the 2 1/2 inch square steel posts keep the run plumb even where ground shifts. We built the walk gate from the same boards and hardware.
