On a tight lot line there is no room to work from the far side, so the order of assembly matters: 2 1/2″ square steel posts set in concrete, three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails between them, then 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ Douglas fir pickets pre-stained cedar tone and nailed on with galvanized ring shank nails. It all goes together from inside the yard. The walk gate carries the same pickets and rails, hung on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch. Because the pickets come already stained, there is no ladder work along a narrow side yard later. Jenks subdivisions put houses close together, and this build respects that.
