Fasteners are the small thing that decides how a wood fence ages. We used galvanized ring shank nails on every picket, because a smooth nail works its way back out as Douglas fir swells and dries, and plain steel leaves a rust stain down the face of the board. Ring shanks bite and stay put. The pickets are 5/8 by 3.5 inch fir with dog ear tops and a cedar tone stain applied before hanging, carried on three fir 2×4 back rails and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete. The walk gate uses galvanized hardware as well. Choices at that scale are why a fence still feels tight after several Broken Arrow winters.
