Sun does more damage to a wood fence in Oklahoma than rain does, and these pickets went up already stained. The cedar tone finish on the 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot Douglas fir slows the greying and surface checking that a bare board picks up on a west facing run. Underneath, three fir 2×4 backrails hold the pickets flat, and galvanized ring shank nails keep their bite as the wood cycles wet and dry. The posts, 2 1/2 inch square steel set in concrete, keep the base of the fence out of the weathering story altogether. We built the walk gate to match.
