West facing yards take a beating from afternoon sun, and a pre-stained picket starts out with some protection already on it. These are 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot Douglas fir dog ear boards in a cedar tone finish, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails to three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails. The 2 1/2 inch square steel posts underneath are set in concrete, which keeps the run plumb through the heat, the freeze, and the clay movement in between. Fir is a strong, straight grained board that takes fasteners well. Heavy duty hinges and a dependable latch finish the walk gate. Coweta yards with open exposure do well with this.
