Both runs here use the same recipe: 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ Douglas fir pickets pre-stained in cedar tone, three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, 2 1/2″ square steel fence posts set in concrete, and galvanized ring shank nails. Building them alike keeps the tone and the top line matched where the sections meet. The walk gate has an adjustable diagonal support brace, so it can be pulled back square if it ever starts to drop, and it swings outward away from the house.
