Height and framing were chosen together here. A full six feet of solid picket catches wind, so the run sits on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete rather than timber. The pickets are Douglas fir at 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet, pre-stained cedar tone, hung on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails with galvanized ring shank nails. Steel posts stay dimensionally stable while the wood around them moves with the seasons, and that is what keeps a top line straight years later. We built the walk gate from the same pickets, on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch. Broken Arrow gets its share of storms, and this build stands through them.
