A stained fence and a raw one age on different timelines, and the cedar tone on this Douglas fir gives you a steady warm brown from the start instead of a patchwork that evens out over a couple of seasons. Dog ear tops finish each picket. The face is 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch stock nailed to three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails with galvanized ring shank nails, all carried by 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Steel does not rot at grade, where a timber post usually gives out first. We framed the walk gate in the same material and hung it on heavy duty hinges. It fits a Broken Arrow back yard in daily use.
