Cedar tone is a warm mid brown, dark enough to read against green and light enough that it never looks painted, and it went onto these Douglas fir pickets before they left for the job. Dog ear tops break up the silhouette. The build underneath is what handles the wind: 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails spreading the load, and 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch pickets fixed with galvanized ring shank nails, which resist working loose. The walk gate is ours, built from the same boards, with a secure latch. Out around Skiatook the yard catches weather from every direction, so the frame matters as much as the face.
