Pre-staining the Douglas fir in a cedar tone means color goes on every face of every picket before installation, including the edges a brush can never reach once boards are up. Those 5/8 by 3.5 inch pickets hang on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, a combination that keeps the run straight as the ground moves through wet and dry seasons.
