Both sides of this fence age at the same rate, which keeps things easy with the neighbors. The Douglas fir pickets came pre-stained in a cedar tone before they were hung, so the color sits evenly across the face rather than being brushed on after the fact. Three fir 2×4 backrails and galvanized ring shank nails hold the 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot boards square, and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete carry the weight without rotting where wood meets soil. The walk gate we built uses the same pickets, heavy duty hinges, and a secure latch. Lot lines run close in Broken Arrow, so a fence that settles in from either side earns its place.
