Pre-staining the pickets before they go up means the cedar tone finish reaches the edges and the back faces, not just the side you see from the yard. Those pickets are 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ Douglas fir, dog ear cut, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails that grip and stay put when the boards move. Three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails run behind them, and the whole panel hangs on 2 1/2″ square steel posts set in concrete. The walk gate repeats the same picket pattern and swings outward, away from the house, with an adjustable diagonal brace holding it square.
