Straightness comes from the posts, so that is where the day went. We set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete along a strung line, then framed with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails once the footings were solid. Pickets are 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch Douglas fir with a pre-stained cedar tone, nailed on with galvanized ring shank nails. The wood walk gate was built to match and hung at the end. Three backrails keep tall pickets from cupping and bowing, which is the first thing anyone notices when a privacy fence starts to age. Owasso yards get full afternoon sun, and that framing helps them hold their shape.
