Hinges and latches take more wear than any board on a fence, so they are worth naming. This walk gate hangs on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch, built in our shop from the same Douglas fir as the run, and it should stay easy to work long after the wood has mellowed. That run uses 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot pickets, pre-stained cedar tone, on three fir 2×4 backrails with galvanized ring shank nails. The 2 1/2 inch square steel posts are set in concrete and will not rot at grade. Owasso side yards see traffic every day, and that is the part you want built properly.
