These 5/8 by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets were stained cedar tone before delivery, so color wraps the board and weathers at one rate everywhere. Structurally, 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete carry three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, and galvanized ring shank nails hold the pickets to them. Steel posts also let a run sit tight against a property line without a wide footing spread. The walk gate we built matches, on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch.
