The walk gate opens outward, away from the house, which keeps the swing clear of the wall and any steps on the inside. It carries an adjustable diagonal support brace, so if the gate ever starts to drop at the latch corner you tighten the brace instead of rebuilding the frame. The fence beside it uses 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ Douglas fir pickets in a dog ear cut, pre-stained cedar tone before they reach the yard, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails to three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails. The posts are 2 1/2″ square steel set in concrete, and that is the part keeping a wood fence straight through Bixby’s clay and wind.
