The clay soil under this part of the state swells when it takes water and shrinks tight when it dries, and that movement is what pushes fence posts out of plumb over the years. Concrete footings around 2 1/2 inch square steel posts give the line something to resist it with. Above grade the build is simple: three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, 5/8 by 3.5 inch fir pickets cut dog ear, and galvanized ring shank nails at every rail. The cedar tone stain went on ahead of the install. The walk gate uses the same pickets and hardware, so the run reads as one piece. Bixby ground behaves this way across older and newer additions alike.
