Digging came first, and around Claremore that means working through heavy clay. We set 4×4 treated posts in concrete, framed with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, and hung 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets pre-stained in a cedar tone, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. The privacy walk gate was built to match and installed once the run was finished. Concrete footings count for more in soil that swells and shrinks with the seasons, since a post set without them will start leaning within a couple of years. That soil movement is a fact of life here, and a fence has to be built expecting it.
