Treated 4×4 posts, concrete footings, and three back rails: the recipe is old because it works. Treatment lets the post live in wet soil, the concrete spreads its load across ground that swells and shrinks with the season, and the Douglas fir 2×4 rails keep every picket in line. Those pickets are 5/8 by 3.5 inch Douglas fir with cedar tone stain already on them, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. We built the walk gate from matching boards, sturdy back rails inside the frame, hung on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch.
