Three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails run behind these pickets, not two. The middle rail keeps a six foot board from cupping away from the fence over a few Oklahoma summers, and it gives the galvanized ring shank nails a third point of grip. The 5/8 by 3.5 inch Douglas fir pickets arrived pre-stained in cedar tone, so the coating reaches edges and back faces a brush never touches once a fence stands. The 4×4 treated posts are set in concrete. We built the walk gate from the same stock, on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch, so it wears at the rate of the run beside it. A Bixby backyard gets an even, finished wall on day one.
