Cedar tone stained Douglas fir over treated 4×4 posts is the traditional version of this fence, and the pre applied finish is what keeps it from looking new for only one season. Pickets are 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch with dog ear tops, carried on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. The 4×4 posts are pressure treated and set in concrete, which is what stands up to moisture collecting at grade. Wood posts also let a run follow ground that rises and falls without looking stepped. Its walk gate was built alongside the fence from the same stained stock. Across a Bixby back yard the whole thing reads as one piece.
