A 2×6 cedar cap board and 1×4 cedar trim do more than dress up the top of a fence. The cap sheds water off the picket ends, which is where end grain drinks moisture and where a wood fence usually starts to gray and split. Under it are 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar pickets, three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Out front, a run of Ameristar Montage Classic three rail on 2 inch 16 gauge posts keeps the approach open, with a 4 inch picket airspace. We hung the iron walk gate and built the wood one. Both materials fit the scale of a Bixby home.
