A cap and trim fence gets built from the bottom up and finished from the top down. We set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, framed with three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, and nailed 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets on with galvanized ring shank nails. Then a 2×6 cedar cap board went across the top with 1×4 cedar trim beneath it, tying the picket tops together and shielding the end grain from rain. The walk gate uses a welded 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tube frame and opens outward. On the hillier ground around Sand Springs, a capped top line gives the eye something level to follow.
