The finished top edge is what you notice first on this one. Rather than leaving picket tops open to the weather, a 2×6 cedar cap board closes the run and a 1×4 cedar trim board covers the seam beneath it, giving the fence a defined top line and shielding the end grain where water does the most harm. Below that, 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar pickets hang on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete carry the load. Every board is fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. The result is a continuous, unbroken screen. Cap and trim shows up often on Tulsa yards where the fence is part of the architecture.
