A cap board and trim change the character of a privacy fence entirely. Here a 2×6 cedar cap runs the top of the pickets with 1×4 cedar trim beneath it, so the top line becomes a deliberate horizontal instead of a row of picket ends. Below that sit 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, galvanized ring shank nails, and treated 4×4 posts set in concrete. The cap also sheds water off the end grain of the pickets, which is usually where a wood fence begins to fail.
