One continuous run, and the whole job came down to getting the posts right. Each 2 1/2 inch square steel post went into a concrete footing along a strung line, spaced to the framing and left to cure. Three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails tie them together, and 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets finish the face, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. Cedar carries natural oils that hold up against rot and insects, so the pickets do fine with no coating at all. Tulsa yards see hard sun and sudden storms in the same week, and a well framed cedar fence takes both in stride.
