Gates fail long before fences do, so this one starts with steel. We welded the walk gate frame from 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing and hung it to swing outward, away from the house, so it clears the ground and never binds against the run. The fence is 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot cedar dog ear picket over three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, all carried by 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete and fixed with galvanized ring shank nails. Cedar takes Oklahoma sun and wet spells without cupping badly. On a Bixby lot with tight side yard clearance, a steel framed gate stays true to its opening.
