Cedar holds up outdoors on its own merit. The oils in the wood resist rot and insects with no coating, and the 5/8 by 3.5 inch pickets weather to a soft gray if you leave them be. They are fastened with galvanized ring shank nails to three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, carried on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts, all set in concrete. Steel below the wood means the part of the fence sitting in damp clay is not the part that rots. The walk gate rides on a welded 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tube frame and opens outward, away from the house, keeping its swing clear of siding. It fits a settled Bixby yard.
