Six feet of picket wants support in three places, and that is what the Douglas fir 2×4 back rails give it here: top, middle, and bottom. Leave the middle one out and boards eventually bow at waist height. The 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar pickets are nailed to those rails with galvanized ring shank nails, and the whole assembly hangs off 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Cedar takes hard sun better than most softwoods, darkening slowly instead of splitting. We built the walk gate to match, with heavy duty hinges and a secure latch. What a Broken Arrow backyard gets out of it is a wall that stays flat.
